AMCinstitute CEO Education Program Recognizes ASAE Outgoing President

WESTMONT, IL (July 23, 2003) — On June 26, 2003, over 90 association management company (AMC) owners and their practice partners spent the day with David Maister, one of the foremost thought leaders on the professional services industry. During this interactive, high-level, educational program, Mr. Maister presented a full-day workshop customized to focus on the challenges and opportunities of managing professional service firms (AMCs), their owners and their practice leaders. “The program actually exceeded my expectations – great delivery, excellent content in an understandable and practical way,” said Lynda Patterson, vice president of Executive Director, Inc.

During lunch, Michael S. Olson, CAE, outgoing president and CEO of ASAE and former AMC owner, was recognized for his contribution to the industry. William MacMillan, CEO of Association Headquarters in Mt. Laurel, NJ, and David Baumann, COO, Executive Director, Inc. in Milwaukee, WI, presented a plaque that acknowledged Michael’s achievements and commitment to the AMC industry.

Olson’s personal remarks included his top ten recommendations to the AMC community:

  1. Accept zero tolerance for improper and unethical business practices.
  2. Achieve higher AMC visibility in industry and in the community.
  3. Commit to and support aggressive marketing of the AMC brand.
  4. Define and promulgate AMC best practices.
  5. Reach out to the supplier community and develop partnerships.
  6. Determine the roles for ASAE and IAAMC.
  7. Engage volunteer leaders of your boards and offer value-added governance support.
  8. Staff your clients with a mix of proven professionals and promising new graduates.
  9. Reach the point where you can be selective in “pitching” to new association clients.
  10. Improve efficiency and economy of management costs and operations.

The AMCinstitute program was sponsored by Hinton & Grusich, a premier national sales office for hotels, resorts and convention and visitor bureaus, and the following properties: Amelia Island Plantation, Boca Raton Resort & Club, Charleston Place Hotel, InterContinental Dallas and The Registry Resort & Club.
