AMCinstitute Formation Announced
On August 17, 2002, the American Society of Association Executives
(ASAE) and the International Association of Association Management
Companies (IAAMC) announced the formation of the AMCinstitute, a
joint project to expand awareness and knowledge of association management
companies.
“Association Management Companies (AMCs) have quietly grown
into a major component of the association industry,” said
Dee Ann Walker, CAE, president of Walker Management Group, Inc.,
Nashville, Tenn., and chair of the AMCinstitute. “According
to the ASAE database, 38.3 percent of AMCs were founded after 1990.
We initiated the project after ASAE-managed focus groups found that
major segments of the ASAE membership had low awareness and limited
knowledge of association management companies.”
The working group envisions a three-year strategic communications
campaign.
“The AMCinstitute’s market expansion plan is a self-funded
program,” said David Baumann, IAAMC president and COO of Executive
Director Inc., of Milwaukee, Wis. “After launching the campaign
today, we received leadership commitments from 58 AMCs totaling
$79,200. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $175,000 annually to
support the activities outlined in our strategic communications
plan. We are committed to achieving our objectives and helping our
member companies.”
AMCs are professional service companies that provide experienced
professionals, proven practices and shared resources to help volunteer
leaders achieve their aspirations, inspire the organizations and
advance their professions, industries and lives of their members.
“The AMC Section has been one of our fastest growing and
most active sections,” said ASAE president Mike Olson. “In
just six years, it has grown to 843 individual ASAE members, many
of whom have contributed to ASAE programs such as the professional
tracks here at ASAE Denver 2002. ASAE is excited to be a key ingredient
of the new AMCinstitute.”
“The program began last May with the development of an infrastructure
for our marketing and industry awareness campaign,” said Bill
MacMillan, CAE, CEO of Association Headquarters, Inc. and chair
of the ASAE AMC Section Council. “We are now ready to 'hit
the streets' and spread the word. As we begin Phase II of the program,
we are working with Sumner Rider, a division of The Kellen Company.”
The AMCinstitute is governed by a task force composed of three
members of the ASAE Section Council and three members of IAAMC.
In addition to Walker, Baumann and MacMillan, the task force includes:
Sammi Soutar, president of Able Management Solutions, Inc., Columbus,
Ohio; Judy Keel, president of Administrative Systems Inc., Westmont,
Ill.; and John Ruffin, president, Association Management Resources,
Inc., Lexington, Ky.
