In this role, Sherwood oversees all administrative and program responsibilities for APHON including its strategic plan, operations management, resource development, business planning, membership and marketing, and partnership with its board of directors. Sherwood began her association career at AMC in 2005, advancing from operations administrator to senior manager of several client partners, including the Metal Construction Association and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology. She left AMC in 2015 to join the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where she most recently was the director of Society Management Services. In that role, she oversaw the day-to-day management of twelve independent societies, developed and negotiated management contracts and proposals for these societies, and served as interim executive director for several of them when needed. According to Steve Smith, AMC CEO, “Amy is wonderful to work with and I am very excited to have her back at AMC. She is a creative strategist who drives organizational improvements that enhance member experiences and value. She is an excellent addition to our executive team, and I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in her new role.” Sherwood replaces Dave Bergeson, who was the executive director of APHON for 10 years while concurrently serving as AMC’s vice president of client relations for the last 2 years. “As I devote my time to fully serving as vice president of client relations, I am confident that APHON will be in good hands with Amy. She is a thoughtful, smart, and hardworking leader with 14 years of progressive experience managing professional healthcare association that will serve her well in this new role.” Sherwood received her Bachelor of Arts in Business and Corporate Communications from Northern Illinois University. She is a Certified Association Executive (CAE), became an ASAE Leadership Academy Graduate in 2010, and was a USAE Forty Under 40 honoree in 2014. Of her new role, Sherwood says, “I’m thrilled to be back at AMC and have the opportunity to work with the dedicated nurses of APHON. AMC’s warm and open culture and focus on shared experiences and best association management practices are what drew me back.” Sherwood joined AMC on April 27 and began her role as executive director of APHON on May 4.
