Case Study:
Learn How Smithbucklin Helped The North American Material Distribution Association (NBMDA) Design a New Program to Help Generate Revenue for Education Programs

NBMDA is a trade association comprised of wholesale distributors and manufacturers of specialty building materials for interiors. Education has a primary role in reaching its goals, but the association is also responsible for providing funding for investments to enhance member value. In an effort to deliver timely, relevant information about industry changes and other valuable information to improve productivity and efficiency for employees, NBMDA designed a new program that would also generate revenue for these programs.

The Challenge

NBMDA membership is comprised of groups with different needs. Therefore, the new program would have to keep these variables in mind when building out the program's structure, ensuring that each group's needs would be met.

The Process

Working with the NBMDA Board of Directors and staff, Smithbucklin helped develop the Education Supporter Program, a year-round education sponsorship opportunity that could:

  • Address the needs of both member communities.
  • Focus on generating funding through member donations to enhance education quality and training.
  • Provide competitively priced education that all members could benefit from.

Through the program, members gain access to NBMDA offerings at a discount. This also allows them to benefit from year-round positioning, setting them apart from the competition. Additionally, wholesaler distributors and manufacturers see members in a more positive light, not to mention receiving complimentary extras like annual dues, convention registration fees, and more.

The Results

In the time since the program was initiated, the program has generated almost $100,000 in revenue, most of which has been allotted to fund future educational activities, with the rest covering dues and event registration fees. In addition, it's also helped to increase business and staff efficiencies plus enhance cash flow early in the year.
